Program Summary

Location: Port Phillip EcoCentre, St Kilda Botanical Gardens, 55A Blessington St, St Kilda VIC 3182
Excursion Duration: 4 hours (10am – 2pm). Shorter excursions (60min, 90min or 2 hour) can also be arranged.
Year Level: Prep to Year 12
Maximum number of classes: 4 (Group max: 25)
Cost per class: $500 + GST
Availability: All terms on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Most suitable in the warmer, drier months of term 1 and 4.

Program Overview

The activities delivered through our Indigenous Perspectives excursion will provide your students with an insight to the local Indigenous culture of the Boon Wurrung people. See the world from an Indigenous perspective. Through a combination of science and story, students will participate in hands-on activities learning about the creation story ‘Time of Chaos’, understanding how Boon Wurrung people are connected to the land through the lens of six seasons, as well as exploring how Indigenous people used Indigenous plants as food and resources. 

This program can be tailored to suit different levels of understanding, from topic introduction through to topic consolidation.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are the oldest, continuous cultures in the world, and have looked after and cared for this Country in a sustainable way for over 50,000 years.

Learning Outcomes

Our programs are aligned to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures cross curriculum priorities for Foundation to Year 12.

Program Options

There are two options for this program. The 3 class excursion includes three 1 hour activities listed below (selected upon booking). The 4 class excursion includes four 45min activities listed below (selected upon booking). 

Shorter excursions (60min, 90min or 2 hour) can also be arranged.

1. Indigenous plants and animals as resources and food
Explore the Womenjika garden or Indigenous section of the St Kilda Botanical Garden where students will see, taste and touch indigenous plants. They will learn about plant and animal resources and food uses. 

2. Six Seasons 
The Yalukut Weelam’s close observation of nature provided them with six seasons by which to navigate their survival in the landscape.  Students will go on a hands-on journey to understand the interconnected between the stars, rainfall, temperatures, plant flower time and animal breeding. Students will practice the Yalukut Weelam language of the Boon Wurrung people, in relation to the six seasons and local plants and animals

3. Connection to Country
The Time of Chaos and Welcome to Country are integral components of the Boon Wurrung culture and your students will learn about these through educator -guided learning and use of film. In groups, students will then create and preform their version of Connection to Country.

4. Waterbugs (Macroinvertebrates)
Clean water is important for the survival of all living things including humans. Learn about our local pre-European local wetland, creek and swamp landscapes and the important of fresh water for the Boon Wurrung people. Students will be hands on with classifying healthy water macroinvertebrates (water bugs) within St Kilda pond and will learn how nature is designed to filter and clean water.

5. Growing a native plant
Roll up your sleeves and learn how to propagate (grow) local native plants from cuttings. Seedlings can return to your school or can become part of the EcoCentre’s habitat for Little Penguins program.

All activities have a component of students discussing and deriving actions they can implement in their personal lives and at school to minimise their impact on the environment.

Logistics

Restrictions: Our group sizes are capped at 25 students and our maximum is 100 per excursion. More than 4 classes can be accommodated by special request.
