Celebrating National Volunteer Week: Honouring Our Corporate Volunteers!

by Nadav Zisin

This National Volunteer Week, we are incredibly grateful to our dedicated corporate volunteers who have significantly contributed to the important work we do at the EcoCentre. Your commitment and hard work have made a profound impact on our environment and community.

Here’s a highlight of what we’ve achieved together with our corporate volunteers.

Nest box building for the pollinator hotels

🌊 Removed and Researched Litter on Bay Beaches: With your help, we investigated the litter washed up on the Bay’s beaches. Understanding and addressing this issue is crucial, as litter poses a severe threat to our resident wildlife, including sea birds, dolphins, and penguins. Your efforts provide solid evidence to inform strategies aimed at reducing litter and protecting our unique biodiversity.

🌱 Planted Thousands of Indigenous Plants: Thanks to your support, we planted thousands of indigenous plants, enhancing biodiversity and contributing to healthier habitats. These efforts are vital for responding to rising sea levels and will inform future planting strategies, ensuring our coastal environment thrives.

🐚 Beach Laboratory Exploration: You joined us in making the beach your laboratory, collecting and identifying shells, and learning about the critical role of molluscs in the Bay ecosystem. The data collected will track long-term changes in population, species diversity, climate change, and water quality, enhancing our understanding and conservation efforts.

🐦 Constructed Habitat Boxes and Pollinator Hotels: You were tutored in creating habitat boxes for wildlife and pollinator hotels for native pollinators. These were distributed to private landholders and schools, creating meaningful changes to urban habitat values and fostering a healthier environment for small bird populations and other pollinators.

Be A Marine Biologist for a Day

Thank you for your help! Your contributions have provided invaluable data that will inform future planting strategies in response to rising sea levels. The research on litter and the enhancement of habitats through planting and constructing habitat boxes have made our waterways and habitats healthier, benefiting our diverse wildlife. Additionally, your participation has opened up new conversations on improving habitats for small bird populations and overall biodiversity.

Don’t miss out! Take advantage of the opportunity to make a difference in our coastal environment, waterways and wildlife.

Join us in our mission to protect and preserve our unique ecosystems. Book a meaningful and enriching experience with the EcoCentre and be a part of this transformative journey. Together, we can create a sustainable future for all.

The EcoCentre acknowledges the Kulin Nations, including the Yalukit Willam clan of the Boon Wurrung language group, traditional custodians of the land on which we are located.

We pay respects to their Elders past and present, and extend that respect to other First Nations and Elder members of our multicultural community.
